Olive Strachan, CEO and Founder of OSR Ltd, recently visited the Caribbean in relation to the UKTI Trade Mission.  The blog is in 2 parts; the first leg of her mission took Olive to the beautiful country of Barbados….

“Having being born on the beautiful Caribbean Island of Dominica, I have always had the desire to one day work in the Caribbean. With this in mind, we have invested in land with the intention of offering the same training services as we do in the UK, but with a sister company in West Indies. When I received an invitation from the UK Trade & Investment to attend the ‘Caribbean Education & Trade Mission’ to Barbados and Trinidad in March of this year, I jumped at the chance - and for some reason my husband said he would come with me!

"The first stop was Barbados. We stayed at the Accra Beach Resort and Spa, which I would highly recommend!

"On the first day, we were taken to the British High Commission where we received a fantastic welcome and a complete overview of the Political and Economic aspects of Barbados by Victoria Dean, British High Commissioner to Barbados.

"Presentations followed. arranged by Hadford Howell (Head of Trade and Investment from the Caribbean Development Bank) and the  University of the West Indies to name a few. It was an action-packed day and we left knowing what opportunities were available to us in Education and Training.

"The following day, Hadford and his team had organised individual meetings with potential partners/buyers. It was a thoroughly interesting, informative and enjoyable trip. As an added bonus, we met some lovely people - a big shout-out to Sue Springer and her team from the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association for making us feel so welcome!

"The following day, we were flying out to Trinidad and Tobago on the next leg of the visit – exciting times ahead.  My journey will continue with my August blog..."

5 SIMPLE STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Effective communication is a fundamental element of organisational success at all levels.

To achieve the most favourable results from situations that include other people by enhancing your communication skills to inspire and generate effective business liaisons, there are 5 simple steps to maintaining effective communications:

  1. Understand your own personal communication style and how it impacts on those you are communicating with
  2. Identify the behaviours associated with good working relationships
  3. Use your communication style to influence others and develop effective relationships
  4. Understand the impact of relationships on personal performance, on colleagues and on clients
  5. Communicate effectively to 'gain the edge' and achieve your objectives

These 5 steps will enable the individual to consider possible motivators and can provide a simple framework for dealing with and managing people.

The Effective People Manager

In the management of a team, the human factor is crucial to success!

Once again, employee communications have made global headlines. Helping entreprenurial employees improves engagement and retention of top staff, according to L'Oreal HR Director Isabelle Minneci:

"All the best leaders I know have failed a lot in their career. If we encourage an environment where people are not afraid to try and fail, we will definitely reap the benefits in innovation and unlock worker's potential."

The Effective Communicator
Effective communication is an essential component of organisational success at all levels.

Once again, employee communications have made global headlines. US-based AOL announced a change in their Communication strategy. Sara McAuley, CCP, WLCP. Member, WorldatWork 2014 Board of Directors quotes …

“With regard to manager involvement in employee communications, only 11% of respondents thought that managers effectively implemented and communicated total rewards to employees. In spite of these disappointing statistics, improvement of communications practices continues to be at the top of the list for rewards and HR professionals”

An opportunity to shape our programme for 2014/15

The CIPD Logo

In my position of Chair of the Manchester Branch of the CIPD - I am often asked by our members how we construct our programme of events. Well it is a year long activity culminating in the whole committee which consists of 20 strong volunteers from various backgrounds getting together to produce a programme that is innovative, creative and interesting.

We have been approached by the CIPD Wimbledon to identify local projects that could have an impact on improving better work and working lives. We would really encourage all our members to get involved in helping us to shape our activities for 2014/15. We are constantly striving to understand what your requirements are from us and how we can improve our offering to you.

My personal mission is to build the CIPD brand and to prove that HR really is the business.  The CIPD participate in current trends that are high on the government agenda for example Auto-enrolment and Megatrends. The ethos of the CIPD is to champion better work and working lives through improving people management and development practices to build on greater value for organisations, benefiting society and the economy.

Sue Cole, Director of Studies at British School, Melfi Italy.

I have been a certified TetraMap®  Facilitator for 10 years I have found it to be an engaging model that lends itself to transforming team performance but also works well when used in one to one coaching situations. TetraMap® was created in New Zealand and it offers structured training tools which improve communication and consolidates unity and effectiveness.  It Maps the complexity of nature into four basic Elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire. Then, using the power of metaphor we apply the map to human behaviour.  It supports us to choose a balanced, holistic perspective; whether it is to improve relationships, strengthen teamwork clarify a corporate vision, or provide a framework for organisational development.

Having worked internationally for some years one of the criticisms that delegates make is that some of the profiling tools do not lend themselves to diverse audiences. Another criticism is that often after completing a personality profiling exercise they soon forget what the outcomes were and how it reflects on how they work with others.  Once when I was delivering a session using TetraMap® in Portugal, one of the delegates approached me and said ‘Ahh so we are all different, and it is ok to be different because ultimately we complement each other and our differences make us part of the whole!’  He got it!

Most recently I have utilised the ‘TetraMap®’booklet called ‘Why are you like that’ whilst working with a coachee who could not understand why his Manager was always seeking to build their brand externally and was always looking for recognition from wider stakeholders. Once we had completed the tool together and discussed how the elements worked and the key traits of each one it allowed him some insight into his Manager’s behaviour thus reducing conflict in their relationship.

As a HR/Learning and Development Professional and Coach - I have often found it works well with audiences from both the Private and Public Sectors promoting harmony and understanding amongst diverse groups. It also works well with my ‘Reflective Coaching’ we use the tool to promote self-awareness prior to our coaching session outside. Where we utilise the beauty of nature to broaden and deepen the coaching experience allowing the coachee to understand that the only limitation to achieving their goal is their own self-belief.

TetraMap® is a registered trademark of TetraMap International in New Zealand and other countries

If you've ever been to see a business coach or mentor, the session most likely took place in an office. There's nothing especially wrong with that, of course, but as any office worker will tell you, it can be quite a stifling, claustrophobic environment. That goes double in a one-on-one situation like mentoring; sitting in a room, face-to-face with your new business coach, can be quite and intense (and even unpleasant experience).

We at OSR love trying new approaches to our work, and we recently hit upon a new idea - namely, using the local environment to enhance the coaching experience. Receiving advice for your business is a far more edifying experience when you're walking around a lake or enjoying the sunshine, and now that the weather has (gradually) started to improve, this could be a great approach for OSR and its clients.
